Protect Your Skin From The Great Fire Ball

I can’t begin to stress to you how important sun safety and protection is in Australia…

According to Sun Smart, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In fact, 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. I’m hoping these statistics help you understand just how important sun safety, skin checks and sunscreen is!

However, through my experience I have found sunscreen to be one of the most difficult products on the market. In my opinion, I think it’s because we expect it to do too much in protecting our skin against the great fire ball!

We want it to be ALL natural (obviously), vegan and non nano particle; YET we also want it to be invisible on our skin. We ALSO want it to be water resistant. We then expect it to protect our skin from prolonged sun exposure, when we spend many hours in the sun swimming, exercising and perspiring.

I think we are all guilty of underestimating the power of the sun…

Did you know that sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes on a fine January day in Australia? Especially as UV rays pass easily through water, when we spend the day swimming at the beach or in a pool, we really have little protection against the sun.  With this in mind, also consider that most people don’t actually apply and reapply the correct amount of sunscreen. This then negates the SPF factor on the bottle. So even though your sunscreen may read “SPF30” you may not actually be providing that coverage to your skin… Scary!

Sun Safety Guide

The only way to truly stay safe in the sun is by following the guidelines from the Cancer Council – I’m sure you’ve heard it before, the trusty “slip, slop, slap”. This includes NOT only wearing sunscreen, but also wearing clothing, a hat, staying in shade and avoiding long periods of sun exposure. A complete sun safety regime. So sunscreen is only one part of the regime, not the whole kit and caboodle.

This goes for animals too. Did you know animals get skin cancer too? Take your pet dog for example, sun damage can be a major factor for causing skin cancer and dogs can even be diagnosed with melanomas and mast cell tumors. If left untreated, these can be fatal for your pooch!
