Grab a glass of water and sit down for this juicy read. Ok, if it’s wine… get water anyway. Read on and find out why…
Have you got that tired dehydrated skin feeling? Dry, dehydrated skin can have a range of different causes. One particular word at this time of year that comes to mind is ‘winter’.
One of the biggest causes to our skin looking the way it does in terms of hydration, is of course water, yep your skin gets thirsty too. Our skin however is the last organ that will absorb hydration and water, and we all know in winter it’s increasingly harder to drink water. Suddenly you look at the clock and shit, its 2 o’clock and I’ve had one cup of water and that was in my tea! This can cause many internal problems like headaches, and external problems like pimples and dehydrated skin.
Yet winter, although a big cause for many this time of the year, isn’t the only cause of dehydrated or dry skin. Dry or flaky skin is actually slightly different to dehydrated skin. “Dry” skin, is actually related to the amount of sebum your body produces. Sebum or ‘Sebaceous’ glands act as a barrier preventing evaporation of moisture from the layers of your skin. If your skin has a tendency to be dry through most seasons, chances are your body doesn’t produce much sebum.
So what now? Create a loving healthy relationship with your skin, get to know it, study it, take note on what you are eating, what time of the year it is, or time of the month ladies, and finally what you’re using on your skin, read the ingredients, I repeat, READ THE INGREDIENTS.
Harsh ingredients will strip the sebum from your skin, so yes, you may feel like you have fresh clean skin, for the moment. But in the long run it will make your skin dry. Just like the food you eat, what you put in you get out; the same rule applies for skin. Apply, vitamins, minerals, oils and antioxidant rich natural skincare and your skin will love you for it.
Here’s a few key points-
So on top of drinking (or “forcing” in winter) water, what you put on your skin is what will be the most visibly noticeable. When I was working out (a long time ago; I now sit on the couch and watch Netflix) my trainer Vicki would say, “if you don’t always need to pee, you’re not drinking enough water”.
Our top winter dry or dehydrated skin hacks, Number one; think moisture! Not the cake type of moisture, moisture inside and outside your body! I swear, and so do my girls, by celery juice every morning. It is 80% water and will flush toxins from your system plus is a known potent vegetable for clearing acne.
Exfoliation is key! Get rid of those dead skin layers. Exfoliating regularly removes the dry flaky dead skin cells to reveal smooth healthy skin that can soak up all the moisture, it also stimulates blood circulation for healthier looking glowing skin and as we get older (more mature) we need all help we can get. My top products are either our new Super Acai Exfoliator or we do have a cult following of people that love (all hail) our Pink grapefruit/lemongrass scrub, the Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub. This is absolutely divine, the smell! Lemongrass, grapefruit it’s incredibly uplifting and leaves your skin deeply hydrated and silky smooth.

A perfume called ‘HEADACHE’ – by Sonya Driver
Have you ever sprayed some perfume on, or sat near someone that is wearing a strong perfume and suddenly you have a headache and feel queasy?
If you researched the toxicity in perfume you would flip. The EWG found that most products that contained synthetic fragrances, such as perfumes, lotions, washes etc contain a hormone disruptor chemical called Phthalates. They are linked to many health conditions such as breast and liver cancer, reproductive malformations, diabetes and so much more.
Allergy and intolerance rates are rising due to the amount of chemicals we come into contact with daily. It is near impossible to escape them; from the couch to the dishwasher, personal care products, food, water…. So minimising the dangerous invisible toxic chemicals is the only thing we can do. If I’m going to wear perfume, I just dab a tiny bit of pure frankincense on my clothing.
I know exactly what I like in a cleanser for my face.
I hate creams on it. I love ingredients such as lemon, lime, grapefruit all the citrus, let’s face it we want a super clean face. That’s what a cleanser is supposed to do. I hate residue left behind.
So my family were the test models. They are normally my biggest critic.
This cleanser is an extraordinary super blend of Certified Organic Aloe, Lemongrass & Caviar Lime to really get in and deeply cleanse and helps regenerate the skin for a smoother and more even complexion and is absolutely PERFECT for my skin (50+) and a big plus for my teenage daughters with their breakout and oily skin. Exquisite!
The skin care market is so saturated, and the truth of what’s really good gets buried by who can market it the best. Who can get it into the right hands. Who can get the best packaging and on and on… The show begins; ‘stuff’ the ‘actual’ ingredients, let’s not look at that; too tricky, ‘time-poor’. Blah blah blah
I know all this, because I was unaware of this trap years ago too. I now grab a bottle and read the ingredients. Not as difficult as it sounds! You will start seeing the usual bad guys.
That’s why I wanted my SMALL skin care range to be certified by the Australian Organic Food Chain. I buy and support certified organic brands. Whether it’s food or cosmetics. Because I know how hard it is to get certification! It pi$&@s” me off when I hear people say “yes, but is it really organic?” If a product is certified by an Australian Certifier, it HAS BEEN through the wringer!
Face Compost SOLD OUT first week. It’s a vulnerable thing to create and offer a product in the market. I know I suffered from insomnia before the launch (a bit edgy too, apologies to the folk I live with) there is always a little bit of doubt whether people will love it as much as you do.
So when we SOLD OUT in the first week, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry!
Bloody grateful woman right here. I gave a few Face Compost Masks to a couple of tough critics in my life. When they came back with feedback like this, I knew it was a Divine appointment, assignment, creation! Face Compost SOLD OUT first week.
“OMG Sonya, I feel like I have had a facial! I’m using this every week. Its freakin awesome” – Kerry
Certified Organic Glory Oil – Restore your skin to its true glory!
GLORY, GLORY HALLELUJAH – new super seed Certified Organic Glory Oil sent from heaven!
So in May of 2017 I had a large basil cell carcinoma (skin cancer) cut from my face. I underestimated the trauma that it left both physically and emotionally.
Not only did I have to face getting older, fatter etc but with a huge raised scar in the middle of my face really shook my confidence. I felt so sad for myself. Not because of vanity just because I looked, well, not like me.
I called up my female cosmetic chemist and asked her to make me something that would give me the best shot at healing. My brief. Must be certified organic (of course) healing and non-greasy. I want a miracle oil! My Beautiful chemist herself had a melanoma cut from her arm recently and we were in the same boat. She actually had a worse time than me.
Certified Organic Glory Oil was born! I’m not making this up, people close to me have been asking me what I use on my skin as it looks gorgeous. Maybe they are trying to make me feel better I don’t know, it’s working anyway.
Face Compost Mask | Organic Superpower for your face.
My mother is a natural beauty. Gentle in nature and strikingly elegant in looks. My earliest memories of ANY beauty products as a child was of my mum wearing a face mask once a week as she did the ironing, (ironing sucks, I don’t do it)!
I have had the exact face mask I wanted to make in my brain for years and years. I wanted to put ingredients in this mask that actually do something and have a specific purpose.
This mask is TRULY unique. I have had the name Face Compost for years as that was what I wanted it to be based on. Super organic greens, seeds, oils all the stinky chunky good stuff!
No toxic perfume to cover up the spinach, chlorella, spirulina smell. This mask is PACKED with skin benefits. White clay is the best out of the clays for all skin types. It is a great detoxifier and the Chia Seeds and Acai work their magic and clean out the pores. SERIOUSLY, Face Compost leaves your skin feeling deeply nourished. One of my GF’s said “Son, I feel like I’ve had a facial. This is brilliant!”
I’m addicted. If I see lemongrass on a menu, that’s my dish! A piece of Lemongrass in hot water and that’s my tea. And Lemongrass for skin? Well that’s my favourite ingredient in organic beauty products.
It is seriously the most exotic, refreshing, mind clearing, diverse herb you could ever find. The aroma is unique and the benefits from its oil are numerous.
That’s why I often included it in my products. When I’m braining storming for new products I’m always like “OHHHH what about Lemongrass!!!” Blah blah blah… My team often smile and roll their eyes knowing what was coming.
Gold Coast mums unite to spread organic awareness and convince more of the population to re-visit organics.
No longer just a passing hippy fad, the organic movement is here to stay. Organic foods are simply foods without multiple toxic sprays. As demand continues to grow for organic options, the more affordable it’s becoming.
Sonya Driver, Founder of Gold Coast based global business, Eco Tan, recently paid a visit to local business owner, Bec from ‘A Life to Live’. A Life to Live are located in Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast and deliver organic food boxes to your home. As we celebrate Organic Awareness this month, Sonya wanted to gather organic tips and knowledge to share with her eco-aware audience.
